Sight for Kids 2004 - 2006

The Project goal was to eradicate treatable blindness among the school children studying in the schools of the Bombay Municipal Corporation in the age group 5-9 years. The project was sponsored by Lions Club International Foundation, Lions Clubs of Mumbai and Johnson and Johnson.

 

The city of Mumbai is divided in wards for local administrative purpose by the Bombay Municipal Corporation. Each ward has one or two Medical officers who look into the health issue in the area. All National health plan projects like immunization programs of Polio, Vitamin A etc is taken care by the health officers. 1290 schools are across the city. The Ward officers with the help of the schools teachers screened the school children from the normal to the subnormal/abnormal children as per the given guidelines. The Subnormal/ abnormal Children were then examined by the Interns of Lotus College of Optometry and refraction and preliminary examination was performed. For children with refractive errors, Low vision or amblyopia the glasses or devices were prescribed. Kids who were identified with other Ocular morbidity were referred for further treatment at the identified Lions Hospitals. Vision Screening and refraction was done for three lakh school children in the age group of 5-9 years. The spectacles were then made as per prescriptions and distributed to the children with help of ward officers and Lions Volunteers.

 

Organisations involved in the project were Bombay Municipal Corporation 's Schools teachers, Medical Ward officers, Lotus College of Optometry, Baliwalla and Homi, Lions's Eye Hospitals and Volunteers from Lions Clubs of Mumbai.
