Census of 2011 shows that the city and its suburbs have population of 23 million of which 40% are children. The prevalence of uncorrected refractive errors is close to 10% and still remains leading cause of childhood blindness with the prevalence as 4 % in school going children.
Considering the need the proposal was shared and Kangroo Kids Foundation came forward support funds for 10,000 children. This is an ongoing project and the goal is to screen children from underprivileged areas of Mumbai city in schools for visual problems. Following vision screening, children who require detailed examination will be brought to Lotus Eye Hospital’s pediatric ophthalmology department. Children, based on the evaluation will be treated with medical managements, spectacles, low vision devices or eye exercises. The expected outcome of the project is to reach out vision care to atleast 10,000 children, dispense pairs of spectacles and to treat children with medical management and rehabilitation with low vision devices.
We would also generate awareness for school teachers, volunteers and school children for need for eye care services.
