Custom made ocular prosthesis

What is an Ocular Prosthesis?

An ocular prosthesis or an artificial eye replaces an empty orbital socket due to any Enucleation, Evisceration or Phthisical eye to give a good cosmesis to a patient. Custom made ocular Prosthesis fits over an Orbital implant and under eyelids.

How Ocular Prosthesis is made.

Custom made prosthesis is made by trained Optometrist or Ocularist. It is a tailored method where complete eye is made taking the contour of the socket, to fit accurately for achieving better cosmesis in the form of Size, shape, color and Movements. This is unlike stock eyes, where they are produced in mass without conforming to any particular size and shape of the socket. This is why they sometimes do not give good cosmetic appearance.

Orbital Stimulation.

This is a technique to increase the volume of the congenital anophthalmic socket in children or in case of contracted socket. This is the most accepted non surgical technique to improve the fornices for ocular prosthesis to rest. This can also be used in very small children to help improve the growth of the Orbital contents, and once this is achieved patient can be fitted with Custom made ocular prosthesis..
