Project Plan for Refractive Error project among School Children


Project Title: Sight for Kids 

Project Sponsors: Lions Club International Foundation, Lions Clubs of Mumbai, Johnson and Johnson. 

Project Goal: To eradicate treatable blindness among the school children studying in the schools of the Bombay Municipal Corporation in the age group 5-9 years. 

Duration of Project: May 2004- 2006. 

Project Objective: To conduct vision Screening and refraction for three lakh school children in the age group of 5-9 years. To identify other cases like amblyopia, squints, and other ocular morbidity and refer for further treatment at the identified Lions Hospitals. 

Organizations involved: Bombay Municipal Corporation 's Schools teachers, Medical Ward officers, Lotus College of Optometry, Baliwalla and Homi, Lions's Eye Hospitals and Volunteers from Lions Clubs of Mumbai.

Modus Operandi of the Project: The city of Mumbai is divided in wards for local administrative purpose by the Bombay Municipal Corporation. Each ward has one or two Medical officers who looks into the health issue in the area. There are 1290 schools across the city. All National health plan projects like immunization programs of Polio, Vitamin A etc is taken care by the health officers. 

  • The Ward officers with the help of the schools teachers screen the school children from the normal to the subnormal/abnormal children as per the given guidelines. 

Role of Lotus College of Optometry

The Subnormal/ abnormal Children are then examined by the final year students/interns of the Lotus College of Optometry and refraction and preliminary examination is performed. For children with refractive errors, Low vision or amblyopia the glasses or devices are prescribed. For other conditions like squints etc. the children are further referred to the respective Lions hospitals.

  • The spectacles are then made as per prescriptions and distributed to the children with help of ward officers and Lions Volunteers.
