World Sight Day (WSD) is an annual day of awareness towards eye and vision care, promoted by the World Health Organization and International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness. It is observed on the second Thursday of October every year to focus global attention on blindness and vision impairment.World Sight Day is an important advocacy and communications opportunity for the eye health community. It is a great time to engage with a wider audience – a patient’s family, those who seldom get an eye exam, diabetics – and showcase why eye health needs everybody’s attention.

This year’s call to action: Eye care for all. This year, IAPB urges you to focus on everybody who needs eye care services – everybody.

Lotus College of Optometry is always proactive in community eye care and advocacy. Taking this clue from WHO,   week long activities were planned along with the faculty and students of the college, culminating with WSD. The activities for the week organized were, eye camps for special focus groups on each of the days.

Eye screening camps were organized in several underprivileged schools in Mumbai and in the suburbs from October 5-10, 2015. Eye camps were done in four schools in Mumbai and three ashrams for children in Pali, which is located in Raigad district some 80 kms from Mumbai city. A total of 4150 children were screened and 190 were given spectacles.Market City Mall, one of the biggest malls in Mumbai to generate awareness among the public for eye care. This activity saw a foot fall of over 800 people in one single day.

The impact of this activity was three fold; service delivery, awareness generation and competencies training for young optometry undergraduates.  All the needy patients were referred to Lotus Eye Hospital and they will eye care free or at subsidized rates.

The activity also inculcated a sense of responsibility and pride for Optometry in our young eye care professionals of tomorrow.
